Backgammon for money: the doubling cube, apps and risks

Backgammon for money pits two players against each other for a stake, and the doubling cube can raise that stake during the game. Dice make any single game a gamble, but checker play and cube decisions decide results over hundreds of games. Real-money options online are narrow as of October 2026, and the one active service we could verify is a US-only app.

How backgammon for money works

01

Choose a lobby

Pick the stake, the match length and the move timer. Apps pair you with a player of a similar rating.

02

Roll and move

Each player moves 15 checkers round the board by the dice and races to bear them all off first.

03

Use the cube

Before rolling, either player can offer to double the stake. The opponent takes and plays on for twice the amount, or drops and pays the current stake.

04

Score the result

Traditionally a gammon pays double and a backgammon triple. Some apps pay a single stake in cash games whatever the margin.

05

Settle

The winner receives the stake times the cube value, minus the site's cut, and the balance moves to their account.

Worked example

Two players play a $10 money game. The cube changes hands twice and player B wins with a gammon.

How the doubling cube moves the stake in a $10 game
MomentCubeAt stakeThe alternative
Start of game1$10Cube in the middle, either player may double
A doubles, B takes2$20B could have dropped and paid $10
B redoubles, A takes4$40A could have dropped and paid $20
B bears off first, A has none off4$40 x 2 (gammon)Game over
Traditional money play: B wins$80
Cash game with no gammon bonus: B wins$40
Backgammon Cash cube limitThe lower of the two players' starting balances

Each double is a choice between a sure loss and a risk. Dropping B's redouble costs A $20. Taking risks $40 either way, so at a 25% chance of winning the take averages 0.25 x $40 minus 0.75 x $40 = -$20, the same as the drop. Ignoring gammons, take with 25% or better and drop below it.

Backgammon for money: money games and points matches

Online backgammon for money comes in two shapes, and the scoring changes the strategy.

Money games (also called cash games or single games) settle each game on its own. The stake is multiplied by the cube value and, in traditional rules, by 2 for a gammon (the loser has borne off no checkers) or 3 for a backgammon (the loser also still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board). Backgammon Cash pays a single stake in its standard cash games, so a gammon earns no more than a plain win there; its separate Gammon Games mode restores the extra payout.

Points matches are played to a target such as 5 or 7 points, with the prize fixed in advance. Gammons and the cube move points instead of money. The Crawford rule applies: in the first game after either player gets within one point of the target, nobody may double, since the trailing player would otherwise double at every chance with nothing to lose. After that game the cube comes back into play.

The difference matters for decisions. In a money game every game is independent, so the right cube action depends only on the position. In a match, the score changes what a gammon or a lost double is worth, so a take that is correct in a money game can be a clear drop at certain match scores.

The doubling cube in money play

The cube starts in the middle at a value of 1, usually showing its 64 face. Either player may double before rolling. If the opponent takes, the stake doubles and the taker now owns the cube: only they can make the next double, called a redouble. If the opponent drops, the game ends at the current stake.

The 25% rule in the worked example is the core of cube play. Gammon chances move the line: if a position also risks losing a gammon, the taker needs better winning chances; if the taker has gammon chances of their own, they can take with less. Owning the cube is worth something too, because the owner can redouble when the game swings their way, which pulls practical take points slightly below 25%.

Cube errors are expensive because each one moves a whole stake. A wrong drop gives up the current stake outright, a wrong take risks double, and a double that comes too late lets the opponent drop cheaply instead of playing on at twice the stake. A weak checker move, by contrast, usually costs a few percentage points of winning chance in one game.

Online, the cube has practical limits. Backgammon Cash caps doubling at the lower of the two players' starting balances and shows the limit on the game screen, so an opponent with a larger balance cannot double you past what you can cover.

Backgammon for real money online in 2026

Backgammon for real money online is harder to find than chess for money or P2P poker. The research for this guide found one active service with a named operator and several dead ends, as of October 2026.

Backgammon Cash is a US app and web service run by Backgammon Cash LLC, a California company. It offers single-game cash lobbies, points matches, Gammon Games and tournaments, plus practice games for a virtual currency called Gold. Real-money play needs identity verification, an age of 18 or over, US residence and a location in an eligible state. The minimum withdrawal is $5, withdrawals are limited to one every seven days, and deposited money can only pay entry fees, so only prizes can be withdrawn. Bonus Cash from deposit offers (the App Store listing says up to 50% extra) can pay entry fees but cannot be withdrawn. Its terms do not state what share of each pot the company keeps, and they send disputes to binding individual arbitration.

The other names that come up in searches did not check out. Play65 and BackgammonMasters.com were unreachable when checked, and the archived BackgammonMasters site carries no licence details. The free Backgammon Masters app, from a different company, forbids real-money winning in its terms. GammonSite runs tournaments for free membership days, not cash, and Backgammon Galaxy offers free play only.

Outside the US, the research found no active backgammon for money app or site with a named operator. Players looking for another staked game that mixes luck and skill can compare dominoes for money, which runs on US skill-game apps in a similar way.

Backgammon tournaments for money

Backgammon tournaments for money use points matches, so one lucky game decides less. Backgammon Cash's tournaments are open-ended: you pay an entry fee, win a 5- or 7-point match to advance, and need three wins in a row to take first place. A loss ends that run, and you can buy in again as often as you like. The company says $100 is a common entry fee and that most tournaments pay roughly 5 to 10 times the entry to first place and twice the entry to second, with exact figures shown before you enter.

The posted payout decides whether a run is worth it. A player who wins half their matches reaches first place once in eight attempts (0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5) and loses the final once in eight. Per $100 attempt that player gets back 0.125 x the first prize plus 0.125 x $200 on average: $87.50 if first pays 5 times the entry, $150 if it pays 10 times. A player who wins 60% of matches takes first place about once in 4.6 attempts.

Buy-backs make it easy to spend more than planned, because re-entry is open straight after every loss. Set the number of entries before you start, not after a bad beat in the final.

Dice, bots and cheating

Every online backgammon service faces the same complaint: that the dice are rigged. App store reviews of backgammon apps often say so, and no single player's bad session can prove or disprove it. What a player can check is whether the site publishes dice statistics and an outside certification. Backgammon Cash shows each player's dice history in their profile and says its dice algorithm is certified by the World Backgammon Federation.

The bigger risk is software. Backgammon bots have played at world-class level for decades, and running one on a second screen turns a money game into a transfer from you to the cheat. Detection compares a player's moves with a bot's choices over many games; Backgammon Cash says 5POINT monitors its matches for bots and outside software and its terms allow permanent bans for cheating. Its terms also ban backgammon helper applications and AI tools.

Bots placed by the platform itself are the other concern on skill-game apps. In April 2026 a US federal jury found Papaya Gaming liable for false advertising over undisclosed bots in its cash tournaments. Papaya does not run backgammon, but the case shows why it matters that a service states its opponents are human.

Disconnects cost money too. On Backgammon Cash the move timer and time bank keep running while you are offline, and if your time expires you forfeit. If the service itself fails, both players get their entry fee back or a credit and no prize is paid.

Backgammon questions

Can you play backgammon for money online?

Yes, but the choice is narrow. Backgammon Cash runs cash games, points matches and tournaments for US players in eligible states. Outside the US, we found no active service with a named operator as of October 2026.

Is there a backgammon for money app?

Backgammon Cash is available as an iPhone app and in a web browser, rated 18+, for US players in eligible states. Several other backgammon apps play for coins that cannot be cashed out, so check the terms for real-money prizes before depositing.

How does the doubling cube work in backgammon for money?

Before rolling, a player can offer to double the stake. The opponent either takes, playing on at double stakes and owning the cube, or drops and pays the current stake. A take is correct whenever you win at least about 25% of the time, adjusted for gammon chances.

Is backgammon luck or skill?

Both. Dice decide individual games, so a weaker player can win any one game, but checker play and cube decisions decide results over a long series. In UK law any game with an element of chance is a game of chance, however much skill it involves.

How do backgammon tournaments for money work?

You pay an entry fee and play points matches, usually to 5 or 7 points, advancing with each win. On Backgammon Cash you need three straight wins to take first prize and can buy in again after a loss. The payout is posted before you enter.

Can you make money playing backgammon?

A clearly stronger player can, because cube errors by weaker opponents cost full stakes. Dice make short-term results swing widely, and the platform's cut comes out of every pot, so a small edge can vanish into fees.
