Head to head fantasy pits your lineup against one other player's, and the higher fantasy score wins. In a season-long league that means a new opponent each week and a win-loss record; in daily fantasy it means a single paid contest where two entry fees form the pot and the site keeps a cut. This guide covers both, with the paid version's fees and rules as of October 2026.
In daily fantasy, choose a sport, a slate of games and an entry fee. In a season-long league, the schedule assigns your opponent each week.
Pick players within the salary cap or the league's roster rules. The lineup locks when the contest starts.
Challenge a named opponent or enter a public H2H. On DraftKings an unfilled public entry is paired at lock with another at the same game set and price; on FanDuel an unmatched H2H is refunded.
Your players earn fantasy points from their real statistics under the contest's scoring table.
The higher total wins. In a $5 DraftKings H2H the winner receives $9 and DraftKings keeps $1.

Without commission, an evenly matched H2H breaks even at 50%. The $1 rake means you must win five matchups in every nine to stay level, so the format only pays players who are clearly better than the opponents they draw.
Head to head is a scoring format first and a money product second. In a season-long H2H league, each team plays one opponent a week. Win the week and your record improves; the best records reach the playoffs at the end of the season. Your total points across the year matter only as a tiebreaker in many leagues.
H2H leagues come in two main types:
Rotisserie, or roto, has no weekly opponent. Teams are ranked in each category across the whole season, and the ranks are added up. A huge week counts in full in roto; in H2H it only has to beat one score.
A simple week shows the difference. Your team scores 125 points, the second-highest total in a 10-team league, but your opponent scores 130. In H2H the week is a loss; in a points-total league the same 125 would rank second. That is the main feature of H2H fantasy football and other weekly formats: luck in the schedule. A strong team can lose a week because its opponent had a better one, and a weaker team can sneak into the playoffs on favourable matchups. The paid one-day version is a separate product, run by daily fantasy operators.
A daily H2H contest is the smallest possible fantasy contest: two entries, one slate, one winner. It is peer to peer in the plain sense, because your opponent's entry fee is your prize, and the operator takes commission whoever wins.
DraftKings sets out its H2H rules in its help centre:
FanDuel's rules cover the same ground differently. A matched H2H cannot be cancelled, an H2H that finds no second player does not run and the entry fee comes back, and entries of $100 or more can be cancelled at any time while still unmatched. FanDuel publishes no H2H commission rate, which is why it has no card on this page.
Auto-matching is the detail to watch. A public H2H can be accepted by anyone at that price, and the pairing at lock gives you no choice of opponent. Direct challenges to people you know, or the block list on DraftKings, are the ways to control who you play.
Beating one opponent is a different job from finishing first in a field of thousands. In a large tournament you need a lineup that can post an unusual score; in an H2H you only need to finish ahead of one other lineup, so steady scorers are worth more and long shots less.
The arithmetic is unforgiving. Play 100 matchups at $5 and win 60 of them: 60 × $4 = $240 won, 40 × $5 = $200 lost, a $40 profit on $500 of entries, or 8%. Win 55 instead and the result is 55 × $4 - 45 × $5 = -$5. A five-point swing in win rate is the whole difference between a small profit and a small loss, and over a short run that swing is mostly luck.
Season-long H2H strategy is the same idea stretched over months: a roster with a high weekly floor wins more matchups than one built on boom-or-bust picks, even if both finish with similar point totals.

The casinos we work with, with slots, live tables and crypto payments. They are standard casinos rather than head-to-head fantasy sites, so the house is on the other side of every bet.
18+. New customers only, full terms on each casino's site. Offers, wagering and payment methods as listed by each casino on 27 October 2026. Amounts are converted from each casino's own currency at the European Central Bank rate and rounded, so the casino's figure in your currency may differ slightly. These are standard online casinos, not P2P sites: you play against the house. We earn a commission when you join through these links. Online casinos are not legal everywhere, so check the law where you live first.

DraftKings is listed because it publishes its H2H commission in its own help pages. It is a US product, regulated state by state and not available in every state, and the card carries the platform label rather than a gambling licence.

Paid head to head fantasy is sold as a skill contest in the US, so its legality turns on state law, and that label counts for nothing in India.
| Country | Position |
|---|---|
| United States | DraftKings' H2H contests are US-only and not offered in every state. FanDuel's rules bar paid contests in Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Washington. |
| Canada | FanDuel's rules admit Canadian residents located in Canada, except in Ontario, where only free contests are open. |
| United Kingdom | The paid H2H contests on this page are not sold in Britain. Any real-money gambling product aimed at British players needs a Gambling Commission licence. |
| India | Banned for money since 1 May 2026. The 2025 Act treats paid fantasy contests as online money games whether skill, chance or both decide them. |
A fantasy format where your lineup plays one opponent at a time and the higher score wins. In season-long leagues you face a new opponent each week and build a win-loss record. In daily fantasy, an H2H is a single paid contest between two entries.
Each week, or each slate in daily fantasy, your players' real statistics convert into fantasy points and your total is compared with your opponent's. In a paid daily H2H the winner takes both entry fees minus the operator's commission.
H2H stands for head to head. In H2H fantasy football your team plays one other team each week, and your record of wins and losses decides playoff places rather than your total points.
In DraftKings' own example, a $5 H2H pays the winner $9 and DraftKings keeps $1, which is 10% of the $10 pot. You need to win 55.6% of such matchups to break even.
On DraftKings, a tie between identical lineups gets the commission refunded automatically. Season-long leagues settle ties under their own league settings.
Neither is better; they reward different things. Roto rewards strength across every category over the whole season, while head to head adds weekly matchup luck and a playoff format.
In the US it runs state by state: DraftKings offers H2H contests in some states, not all. It is banned for money in India since 1 May 2026, and the contests on this page are not sold in Britain.
