1v1 for money: staking on your own video game matches

Playing 1v1 for money means you and one opponent each stake an entry fee on a console, PC or mobile match, and the platform pays the winner from escrow. You are wagering on your own result, which is why US sites sell it as a skill contest rather than gambling. As of October 2026 the format is mostly a US one, run by companies such as GamerSaloon and Players' Lounge.

How 1v1 money matches work

01

Post or accept a challenge

Set the game, platform, rules and stake, or accept an open match. Any point spread has to be agreed before the challenge starts.

02

Stakes go into escrow

Both entry fees leave your available balance and sit with the platform until the result is settled. If nobody accepts, the stake comes back.

03

Play the match

You play on your own console or PC through the game's normal online mode. Record it and screenshot the final score.

04

Report the result

Both players report the score. On GamerSaloon the opponent has 30 minutes to verify or dispute, and unreported matches are void after 75 minutes.

05

Winner is paid, minus the fee

The pot goes to the winner's balance after the service fee. A disputed match goes to an admin, who rules on the evidence.

Worked example

A $10-a-side GamerSaloon match. Its FAQ sets a 14% service fee above $5 but does not say what it is charged on; this table charges 14% to each player on top of the stake. Illustrative.

A $10 1v1 with a 14% service fee
ItemAmountNote
Your stake$10.00Held in escrow
Opponent's stake$10.00Held in escrow
Service fee per player$1.4014% of $10
Your total cost$11.40Stake plus fee
Winner's payout$20.00Both stakes
If you win+$8.60
If you lose-$11.40
Break-even win rate57% (11.40 ÷ 20)

If the 14% comes out of the $20 pot instead, the winner receives $17.20, a $7.20 profit, and break-even rises to 58.1%. Either way, two equally good players both lose money over time; only a clear skill edge pays.

Esports wagering vs playing 1v1 for money

Esports wagering covers two different things. The first is betting on professional matches, which crypto sportsbooks and bookmakers offer against their own odds: the house takes the other side, so it is not peer to peer. The second is staking on your own game against one opponent, where the platform only holds the money and takes a fee. This guide is about the second.

Players' Lounge puts the distinction in its own FAQ: users wager on their own performance, not on other players' outcomes, which is the basis of its claim not to be a gambling platform. The same site also runs "solo bets", where you cover a spread against the house. Those are not P2P, and the fee logic in this guide does not apply to them.

If you want peer to peer stakes on real sport instead, a betting exchange matches you against another bettor; our peer to peer betting guide explains how. For one-on-one contests built on real players' statistics, see head to head fantasy.

Sources: GamerSaloon FAQ, GamerSaloon rules and the Players' Lounge FAQ. Both require players to be 18 or over. Players' Lounge asks for a driver's licence or passport, and US players who withdraw more than $600 must submit tax details for a 1099 form. Its PL+ subscription pays 1.5% cashback on wagers.

Players' Lounge says its matchmaking pairs you with people within your own skill level and that the site is designed for non-professional gamers. That is fairer for newcomers, but it has a cost: two closely matched players each win about half the time, and the service fee turns an even contest into a small expected loss for both. The money in 1v1 goes to players who are clearly better than the opponents they meet.

Bitcoin on GamerSaloon is a deposit route only: withdrawals go to PayPal or by cheque. Neither site is a crypto platform in the way slot or case battle sites are, and neither holds a gambling licence; both rely on the US skill-contest model.

1v1 games for money: FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty and more

Sports titles suit the format best because the result is a scoreline both players can see and screenshot. GamerSaloon's FAQ still names FIFA 22, Madden NFL 22, NHL 22 and NBA 2K22 among its EA Sports and 2K examples, and says it supports any online head-to-head game of skill. Players' Lounge lists EAFC, Madden NFL, NBA 2K and MLB The Show on its sports app, plus Battlefield, Fortnite and Call of Duty.

The house rules matter as much as the game. On GamerSaloon:

  • Custom rosters and custom players are not allowed unless both players agree before the match.
  • Playing with a guest without telling your opponent first can cost you the decision.
  • Lag is not grounds for a win: unless the game is exited straight away, it has to be played out. Intentional lagging is an automatic loss.
  • A point spread only counts if both players agreed it before the challenge.

Shooters and battle royales are harder to settle, because a round can end in ways that a single screenshot does not capture. Agree the exact mode, map and win condition in the challenge text before you accept.

What goes wrong when you play 1v1 for money

  • False score reports. An opponent can report a win they did not earn. Players' Lounge bans false reporting and multiple accounts, but you still need proof: record every match on your console.
  • Tight deadlines. Ten minutes to submit evidence on Players' Lounge, and 30 minutes to verify or dispute on GamerSaloon. Miss the window and the reported score stands.
  • Penalties for disputes. GamerSaloon fines $1 for a dispute with no valid claim or evidence, and three disputes in 15 days puts an account on 15-day probation.
  • Cash-out costs. A $3 PayPal fee takes a large share of a small balance, and a cheque costs $24.95.
  • The fee itself. On a $5 match, a $0.50 fee paid by each player means risking $5.50 to collect $10, so you need to win 55% of the time; above $5 the 14% fee pushes that to 57% or more, as the worked example shows.

Similar 1v1 cash formats exist for board games: our chess for money guide covers staked chess and its fair-play checks.

Where to play esports duels

GamerSaloon is listed because it names its company and publishes its 1v1 fee. It is a US skill-contest platform with no gambling licence, and the card is labelled that way.

1v1 for money questions

Can you play 1v1 for money?

Yes, on skill-contest platforms such as GamerSaloon and Players' Lounge, if you are 18 or over and in a US state where they allow cash play. Both players stake an entry fee, the platform holds it in escrow, and the winner is paid after the service fee.

What is GamerSaloon?

A US site for 1v1 video-game matches and tournaments, run by Beyond Gaming, LLC of Michigan. It charges $0.50 on matches of $5 or less and 14% above $5, and takes deposits by PayPal, card, gift card, Bitcoin or money order.

How does Players' Lounge work?

You create or accept a match, the entry fee moves into the match until it is played, and the winner receives it. If scores conflict, both players upload evidence within 10 minutes and an admin decides. It publishes no head-to-head fee.

Can you play FIFA 1v1 for money?

Yes. GamerSaloon names FIFA titles among its supported EA Sports games, and Players' Lounge lists EAFC. Agree the mode, match length and roster rules before you accept, and screenshot the final score.

Is esports wagering legal?

Betting on professional esports happens at sportsbooks against the house, under the betting rules of the country you are in. Staking on your own 1v1 match is sold as a skill contest in most US states, is barred in the states each operator lists, and is banned for money in India.

What happens if my opponent reports the wrong score?

Dispute it inside the platform's window and upload video or screenshots. On GamerSaloon you have 30 minutes after a report, and on Players' Lounge evidence is due within 10 minutes. An admin rules on the evidence.
