Case battles: how CS2 case battles work

Case battles are a skin-gambling format in which two or more players pay for the same set of CS2 cases, open them side by side, and the highest total item value takes every skin opened. The cases are the site's own loot boxes, not Valve's, and the site earns from the edge priced into them. Of the case battle sites we checked, only one holds a gambling licence we could match on a regulator's register.

How a case battle works

01

Top up a balance

Deposit CS2 skins, crypto or a card. The site turns it into its own token, such as coins or gems.

02

Create or join a battle

Pick the cases, the seats (1v1, 2v2, 1v1v1v1, up to six players on Clash.gg) and a mode.

03

Every seat pays the case total

Each player pays the combined price of the chosen cases, so all seats stake the same amount.

04

Cases open round by round

Items are valued with the site's own price list, and running totals update after each round.

05

Winner takes every item

In the standard mode the highest total collects all the skins, which can then be withdrawn as skins or crypto.

Illustrative · no real money

Worked example

Illustrative figures. A 1v1 Classic battle with two cases priced at $5 each, so each player pays $10.

Example 1v1 case battle
PlayerPaidCase 1 itemCase 2 itemTotal value
Player A$10.00$2.10$11.40$13.50
Player B$10.00$3.20$4.10$7.30
Paid in by both players$20.00
Value of all items opened$20.80
Player A receives$20.80 in items

Player A finishes $10.80 up and Player B loses $10. With a 5% edge, the figure CaseBattles.gg publishes for battles, each $10 set of cases is worth $9.50 on average, so the two seats lose $1 a battle between them. At CSGOEmpire's published 8.8% case edge the average loss is $1.76.

How case battle sites make money

Most case battle sites take no separate rake. The cut is built into the case prices: the average value of the items inside a case is lower than what the case costs. Few sites publish the number. As of October 2026:

  • CaseBattles.gg: 5% house edge on battles, cases, coinflip and duels; 10% on Mines and Upgrader.
  • CSGOEmpire: "cases operate with an 8.8% house edge" and coinflip carries a 0.5% fee, with no separate battle figure (CSGOEmpire FAQ).
  • Clash.gg: its FAQ says every game has a listed house edge, but publishes no figure we could read. Its Borrow Gems option, which lends a battle creator up to 80% of the entry, charges "a small fee" with no amount stated.
  • CSGORoll, Farmskins and Rain.gg: no battle fee or edge published.

The published range is therefore 5% to 8.8%. Item values come from each site's own price list, which is a second lever the operator controls.

Bonus balances carry conditions. CaseBattles.gg requires deposits to be wagered once and bonus gems three times, plus a $10 real deposit before any withdrawal. Rain.gg says all coins must be wagered before they can be redeemed.

CS2 case battles modes and rules

Mode names vary by site, but most CS2 case battles lobbies offer some of these:

  • Classic or Normal: highest total value wins.
  • Crazy: lowest total wins. CSGORoll breaks Crazy-mode ties with a coin flip.
  • Terminal: only the most valuable item in the final case counts.
  • Jackpot: your chance of winning equals your share of the value unboxed, so 70% of the value gives a 70% chance. It is the same stake-weighted draw as the jackpot pots covered in our dice duels and jackpots guide.
  • Shared or Group: the total is split equally, so nobody wins outright.
  • Teams: teammates' totals are added together.

Farmskins' Farm Zone is a warning about reading the rules: its product page says the best skin in each round wins that round's drops, while its terms say the highest total wins everything, and losers may get a consolation item. CSGORoll adds an early cash-out that locks in a guaranteed amount mid-battle, capped at 4 cases per battle and not available in Clutch mode.

None of this involves skill. Clash.gg's own page answers the question directly: "Is there actual skill involved? Not in the traditional sense." Cases, mode and stake change the variance, not the expected loss.

Bots, provably fair seeds and Steam

A PvP seat can be filled by the house. CSGORoll offers Dealer Backup and a call-a-bot option, and Clash.gg's rules allow battles against "other participants, or bots". Against a bot you are betting against the operator, at the edge priced into the cases.

Most sites use commit-reveal fairness. CSGORoll gives each player a server seed on joining and shows its SHA-256 hash straight away; the public seed is the hash of an EOS blockchain block that is not mined until every play is committed, and the nonce is the PvP play ID. CaseBattles.gg combines a server seed with a Random.org seed, and CSGOEmpire says its battles use a different system from its case openings. Our provably fair explainer shows how to recompute a result. These checks cover the roll; case prices and item valuations sit outside them.

Valve said in July 2016 that it has "no business relationships" with these sites and that using Steam sign-in and automated accounts to run a gambling business breaks its API terms and user agreements (Steam announcement). Steam trades can be reversed, so sites hold skin deposits for a period; CaseBattles.gg puts an account into "reversal debt" if a deposit is pulled back. Crypto deposits have no hold, but the balance moves with the market and wallet mistakes are the player's problem.

Best case battle sites: start with the licence

Lists of the best case battle sites rarely mention licensing, and most of these sites have none. CSGOEmpire is the one operator we verified: Curaçao Gaming Authority licence OGL/2024/1183/0869, issued to Moonrail Limited B.V., shown as Active and granted 31 March 2025 on the CGA certificate page.

The others name a company and no gambling licence: CSGORoll (Max Stacks Limited, Nevis), CaseBattles.gg (a Belize company), Farmskins (ARPS LOOP LTD, Cyprus), Clash.gg (Rust Clash Entertainment Ltd, Cyprus) and Rain.gg (Make It Holdings Limited, Belize). A Cyprus or Belize company address is not a gambling licence. Clash.gg's terms say it does "NOT OFFER REAL MONEY GAMBLING" and frame play as Gold Coins and redeemable Gems; CSGORoll uses Roll Coins and Roll Chips the same way. That is their legal framing, and regulators can see it differently: Sweden's Spelinspektionen classed Hellcase's skin cases as lotteries and banned its operator, Yomoly Ltd, from Sweden on 27 October 2025 (decision, in Swedish).

CSGO case battles and Rust case battle sites

Many sites still say CSGO case battles; the cases and skins are CS2 items either way. Case battles for Rust skins run on the same model: CaseBattles.gg pays out in Rust skins as well as CS2, RustClash, run by the same company as Clash.gg, lists case battles, and RustMagic, run by Wizlabs LTD in Limassol, offers case battles as its only PvP mode with no licence shown.

Skin gambling and under-18s

Skin gambling has a history of drawing in children. The UK Gambling Commission warns that "there is a risk that children may be gambling using skins" (UKGC), and in its 2023 survey 2% of young people had bet with in-game items on websites outside the game. Every site we checked sets 18 as the minimum age, but several let you sign in with Steam alone, so checks can come late: CSGOEmpire requires identity verification at the latest once deposits and withdrawals reach 4,500 coins. Parents worried about a child's spending can contact GamCare in the UK or Gambling Therapy internationally. Our coinflip guide covers the other common skin-site game.

  • Clash.gg: Rust Clash Entertainment Ltd (Cyprus); describes itself as a sweepstakes that does not offer real-money gambling.
  • Farmskins: ARPS LOOP LTD (Cyprus), no licence claimed; its Farm Zone page and terms state different win rules.
  • Rain.gg: Make It Holdings Limited (Belize), no licence claimed.
  • Hellcase: Sweden banned its operator, Yomoly Ltd, on 27 October 2025; many lookalike domains use the name.

Case battles questions

What are the best case battle sites?

Start with the licence. As of October 2026 CSGOEmpire is the only case battle site we could match on a regulator's register, under a Curaçao licence. Other well-known sites name an offshore company and no gambling licence.

Are case battles rigged?

Most sites publish a hashed server seed before the battle and reveal it afterwards, so you can confirm the roll was not changed. The house edge sits in the case prices and item values, which the site sets.

Can you make money on case battles?

Individual battles can pay well, but every case is priced above the average value of its items. At a 5% edge, $1,000 spent on battles loses about $50 on average.

Do case battle sites use bots?

Some do. CSGORoll lets players call a bot or use Dealer Backup to fill seats, and Clash.gg's rules allow battles against bots. A bot seat means you are playing the house.

Are CSGO case battles the same as CS2 case battles?

Yes. Sites use both names for the same format, and the cases and skins are CS2 items.

Are there case battles for Rust skins?

Yes. CaseBattles.gg pays out Rust skins, and RustClash and RustMagic run case battles for Rust items. None of them shows a gambling licence.

Are case battles legal?

It depends on where you live. The UK treats cashable skins as money's worth, so a site needs a Gambling Commission licence, and Sweden has banned at least one case site's operator.
