Trivia for money: head-to-head quiz battles explained

Trivia for money puts two or more players on a timed set of questions for an entry fee, and the higher score takes the prize the app shows before the match. There is no deal and no dice: knowledge and speed decide almost everything. The cash side usually runs on a skill-game platform such as Skillz rather than inside the trivia app itself.

How a cash trivia battle works

01

Pass the location check

Skillz-powered apps use the phone's GPS to confirm you are somewhere cash play is allowed. Elsewhere you get tournaments for virtual currency only.

02

Pick an entry fee

Each match shows its entry fee and its prize before you join, and the gap between them is the platform's cut.

03

Answer against the clock

In Quezztion's 1-minute battles you answer as many general-knowledge questions as you can, scored on accuracy and speed.

04

Compare scores

The higher score wins. On some platforms your opponent plays earlier or later, so you are chasing a posted score rather than a live player.

05

Collect and withdraw

The prize goes to your platform balance. Withdrawals, by methods such as PayPal, follow any identity checks.

Worked example

Skillz publishes no platform-wide rake: each match shows its own entry fee and prize. The prizes below are illustrative, to show how to work out the cut from what the app displays.

A head-to-head player who wins 55% of $1 matches at a $1.80 prize still loses about a cent a match. The edge has to come from knowing more or answering faster than the players the app matches you with.

How trivia for money is scored

Cash trivia rewards two things at once: getting the answer right and getting it in quickly. Quezztion, a Skillz-powered app, describes its battles as 1-minute matches where you "answer as many questions as you can" and "earn points for accuracy and speed" (App Store listing). A player who knows the answers but hesitates can lose to one who knows slightly less and taps faster.

Matches come in two shapes:

  • Head-to-head battles. Two players, one entry fee each, one prize. The maths is simple, and the break-even win rate is easy to read off the screen.
  • Tournaments and leaderboards. More entries, a larger prize split by placing. A deeper field means a single strong player is more likely to be in your bracket.

Ties need a written rule. Kokomo, a skill-game platform for score-attack games, breaks ties on secondary measures and refunds both entries if the scores are still level. A trivia app should publish its own rule before you pay.

Use the practice mode before staking. Skillz-powered apps offer virtual-currency matches, and the results show how you fare against the players the app matches you with. That record is the only fair way to judge whether you clear the break-even win rate: a player who wins half of their practice matches would lose money at a 10% cut.

Trivia apps that pay real money: how they are built

Most trivia apps that pay real money are two businesses stacked together. The developer makes the quiz; a skill-game platform runs accounts, matchmaking, entry fees and payouts. That split matters, because the platform's terms, not the app's, decide where you can play and how you get paid.

  • Quezztion is published by Approofed, carries an 18+ age rating on the App Store and states that it uses the Skillz platform for transactions, withdrawals, matchmaking and anti-cheat. Its listing promises "real players, not bots".
  • Skillz (Skillz Platform Inc., whose parent company, formerly Skillz Inc., is now FIRY Inc.) holds no gambling licence. It relies on the skill-game model, checks location by GPS and publishes lists of US states and countries without cash play. It shows a prize for each entry fee but no platform-wide rake.
  • Online Money Games runs Drop, a geography duel where two players guess a place from a photo for $1 to $500 in SOL, with 10% taken from the pot. Its terms say there is no company behind it, no licence, and no identity or location check, so it is not linked here.

The same platform model sits behind cash chess and the arcade formats in our skill based gambling games guide.

Is trivia for money gambling? The skill test

Gambling law usually turns on chance, and trivia has very little: no shuffle, no dice, no random payout. The one random element is which questions come up, and a broad general-knowledge set evens that out over many matches. That puts trivia at the skill end of P2P formats, alongside chess.

How countries treat it:

  • Great Britain: the Gambling Act 2005 defines a game of chance to include any game that mixes chance and skill (section 6). Skillz lists the UK as a cash-play country for every title except Solitaire Cube.
  • United States: each state decides whether a paid skill contest is gambling, and platforms geofence accordingly.
  • India: the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 bans online games played for stakes from 1 May 2026, skill games included. Skillz lists India as a country without cash play.

The full country list is on our P2P gambling laws page.

Where you can play trivia for money in the US

Skill platforms switch cash play on and off by state, and the lists do not always match. Read both the platform's terms and the app's own store listing, because the stricter one applies in practice.

  • Skillz terms: no cash play in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana or South Dakota. Card games are also off in Maine and Indiana.
  • A Skillz-powered app listing: Pool Payday, which runs on Skillz, names 12 states without cash play: Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, South Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee.
  • Papaya: in its Bonus Cash States (Arizona, Louisiana and Michigan for all games) you play for bonus cash that cannot be redeemed.

Outside a cash state, Skillz-powered apps switch to tournaments for virtual currency, so the app still works but nothing it pays out can be withdrawn.

Bots, recorded opponents and other risks

The main risk in cash trivia is not luck but who, or what, you are playing.

  • Bots. On 23 April 2026 a US federal jury found Papaya Gaming liable to Skillz for false advertising over bots it did not disclose in its cash tournaments. Skillz says the court will enter a $719 million disgorgement judgment, and an appeal is possible. Papaya's counterclaims alleged that Skillz also allowed bots.
  • Recorded opponents. Papaya's terms allow matches against players who play "earlier or later than you" and who paid a different entry. Asynchronous play is legal under those terms, but it means you never see your opponent.
  • Look-ups. A one-minute clock limits searching for answers, but it does not stop a second device or a helper. Quezztion's listing names Skillz anti-cheat systems; an app that names none gives you nothing to point to when a rival's scores look impossible.
  • Bonus cash. Papaya's bonus funds can enter cash competitions but cannot be withdrawn.
  • Withdrawal checks. Expect identity checks before the first cash-out. Kokomo, for example, asks for ID, a selfie, proof of address and, in the US, a Social Security number, and says redemptions typically take 5-14 business days.

Trivia battles questions

Are there trivia apps that pay real money?

Yes. Quezztion is one: a 1-minute head-to-head trivia app whose cash matches run on the Skillz platform. Cash play depends on your location, and the app shows the prize for each entry fee before you join.

Is Quezztion legit?

Quezztion is an App Store app published by Approofed that uses Skillz, a platform owned by a NYSE-listed company, for payments and withdrawals. Skillz holds no gambling licence and relies on the skill-game model. We read its listing and Skillz's terms; we did not play it.

How do you play trivia for money?

Install a trivia for money app, pass the location and age checks, fund the platform account and choose an entry fee. You answer timed questions, the higher score takes the prize, and winnings can be withdrawn once identity checks are done.

Is trivia for money gambling?

Trivia has almost no chance element, so skill platforms run it as a skill contest and offer cash play in places such as the UK. India bans it for money all the same, and some US states and many countries have no cash play.

Can you play trivia for money outside the US?

In some countries. Skillz lists the UK as cash-enabled and Australia except Queensland and Victoria, but not India, France, Italy, Poland or Portugal, among others.

Do trivia for money apps use bots?

Some skill-game apps have. A US jury found Papaya Gaming liable in April 2026 for not disclosing bots in its cash tournaments. Quezztion's App Store listing says its matches are against real players, not bots.
