Rummy for money: how cash rummy tables work

Rummy for money is 13-card rummy played against other people at a cash table, where the losers' penalty points or entry fees go to the winner and the site keeps a fee. Skill in melding and discarding pays off over many deals, but the deal and the draw still bring luck. India, home of the best-known cash rummy apps, has banned every paid format since 1 May 2026.

How a rummy cash game works

01

Pick a table and a stake

Points tables set a cash value for each penalty point. Pool and deals tables charge a fixed entry that builds a prize pool.

02

Get 13 cards and a wild joker

Cards come from two decks with printed jokers. A card turned face up, the cut joker, makes every card of its rank wild for that deal.

03

Draw, discard and meld

Each turn you take a card from the closed stock or the open pile and throw one back. A valid hand needs at least two sequences, one of them pure (no joker), with the rest in sets or sequences.

04

Declare or drop

The first player to meld all 13 cards declares. The others score their unmatched cards, or take 20 points for dropping on their first turn and 40 for dropping later.

05

Settle the table

Penalty points convert to cash, or the last player under the pool limit takes the prize, and the site deducts its fee before paying out.

Worked example

One deal of points rummy at $0.10 a point with four players. The fee is assumed at 10%, the highest published fee among the skill-game sites in our research.

Points rummy settlement, $0.10 a point, four players
PlayerHow the deal endedPenalty pointsCash

CLeft with unmatched cards45-$4.50
DInvalid declaration80-$8.00

The 80-point cap limits a single loss to 80 times the point value, here $8.00. Between players of equal skill the money that changes hands evens out over time, and the fee is the only certain result.

Points rummy, pool rummy and deals rummy

The cash formats below all use 13-card Indian rummy. A hand is played the same way in each; what changes is how the money is counted and how long you are committed to the table.

Points rummy

Each point has a cash value set by the table, and a single deal decides the result. The winner collects every other player's penalty points multiplied by that value. Number cards count at face value, aces and picture cards at 10, jokers at nothing, and no player can lose more than 80 points in one deal. You can leave after any deal, which makes points rummy the format where bankroll swings are easiest to control.

Pool rummy

Everyone pays the same entry into a prize pool and plays deal after deal, adding penalty points to a running total. Reach the pool limit, 101 or 201 points depending on the table, and you are out. The last player left takes the pool less the fee: six players at $5 make a $30 pool, and a 10% fee leaves $27 for the winner. Some pool tables let the last two or three players agree to split the prize according to how many drops each has left.

Deals rummy

Players buy in for a fixed number of deals, such as two, and start with equal stacks of chips. The losers of each deal hand their penalty points to the deal winner as chips, and whoever holds the most chips after the last deal wins the prize pool less the fee. It sits between the other two: shorter than a pool game, but one bad deal cannot be walked away from as it can at a points table.

Rummy shares its fee model with P2P poker, where the site rakes each pot instead of playing against you, and its mix of skill and luck with backgammon.

Is online rummy legal? The skill-versus-chance test

Most gambling laws ask one question about a game played for money: how much does chance decide. Rummy has a clear answer on both sides. The shuffle, the cut joker and every card drawn from the closed stock are luck. Choosing what to keep, what to throw, when to drop for 20 points rather than risk 80, and reading what opponents collect from the open pile are skill, and over many deals a stronger player wins more.

Countries draw the line in different places:

  • Great Britain counts any game that mixes chance and skill as a game of chance, even where superlative skill could remove the chance (Gambling Act 2005, section 6). Rummy for money is therefore gaming, and a site serving British players needs a Gambling Commission licence.
  • India was where cash rummy apps relied most on rummy being a game of skill. The 2025 Act removed that defence by banning money games whatever the mix of skill and chance.
  • The United States leaves it to each state. Skill-game platforms publish their own lists: Skillz switches off cash card games in Maine and Indiana on top of five states where it offers no cash play at all.

An offshore licence does not settle the question for the player. A Curaçao or Anjouan licence lets a company operate from there; it does not make the game legal where you sit. The country-by-country picture is on our P2P gambling laws page.

Rummy for money in India after the 2025 Act

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 bans offering, advertising and processing payments for any online game played for stakes, "irrespective of whether such game is based on skill, chance, or both". The Act and its Rules came into force on 1 May 2026, together with the new Online Gaming Authority of India (PIB, April 2026).

For rummy that means:

  • Points, pool and deals rummy for cash are all banned, along with poker and fantasy contests played for money.
  • Offering or facilitating a money game carries up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Advertising one carries up to 2 years and/or ₹50 lakh, and repeat offences up to 5 years and ₹2 crore.
  • Banks and payment systems may not process money-game transactions, and the authorities can block platforms under the IT Act, 2000.
  • Paying in crypto changes nothing: the stake is still a stake, so an offshore crypto rummy table that takes Indian players is offering a banned game.

Free-to-play social games remain allowed. Press reports say a Supreme Court challenge to the Act is pending, and no stay of the ban has been reported as of October 2026.

What goes wrong at a rummy cash game

A rummy cash game has more players at the table than a chess or trivia duel, and that brings its own problems.

  • Collusion. Two players at a six-seat table who share their hands can feed each other cards and hold back what a third player needs. Pool and deals tables, which run for many deals, give partners more time to work together.
  • Bots. Undisclosed bots are a proven problem in cash skill games: in April 2026 a US federal jury found Papaya Gaming liable for false advertising for not disclosing bots in its tournaments.
  • Disconnects. A dropped connection mid-deal can be scored as a drop, as a full count or by letting the timer play on. The difference between 20 and 80 points is real money at a points table.
  • Fees on every deal. A fee that looks small per game adds up over a long session, because it is taken from the winner of every deal.
  • Withdrawals. Identity checks usually come before the first cash-out, and some sites recover chargebacks from your balance. Know the minimum withdrawal and the verification point before the first deposit.

The same table-level risks apply to ludo for money, the other game that India's cash apps were built around.

Where to play rummy for money

No rummy site is listed here as of October 2026. The best-known cash rummy apps were built for Indian players, where every paid format is now banned, and we list a site only after confirming its company and its licence or legal basis on a public record.

Also offering rummy, not listed here

  • RummyCircle: Indian cash rummy app. India has banned online money games, rummy included, since 1 May 2026.

Fees and country lists come from each site's own terms on the date above; check them again before you deposit.

Check these before you join

  • The point value, and 80 times it, which is the most one points deal can cost
  • The fee as a percentage, and whether it comes off the winnings or the entry
  • How a disconnect is scored: as a drop, a full count or play continuing
  • A named company, and a licence you can find on the regulator's own register
  • Whether your country or state is excluded; an Indian location rules out every cash table
  • The minimum withdrawal and the point at which identity checks start

Rummy questions

Is online rummy legal?

It depends on where you are. India has banned every cash rummy format since 1 May 2026, Great Britain treats rummy for money as gaming that needs a Gambling Commission licence, and in the US each state decides, so platforms publish lists of states without cash play.

Is rummy a game of skill or chance?

Both. Card choices, discards and the decision to drop early are skill, and a stronger player wins more over many deals. The shuffle, the cut joker and each draw from the stock are chance, which is why British law counts rummy for money as gaming.

What is the difference between points rummy, pool rummy and deals rummy?

Points rummy settles every deal in cash at a set value per point. Pool rummy charges an entry and eliminates players at 101 or 201 points until one is left. Deals rummy runs for a fixed number of deals with chips, and the biggest stack at the end wins.

How much can you lose in a rummy cash game?

At a points table one deal can cost at most 80 points times the point value, so $8 at $0.10 a point. In pool and deals rummy the most you can lose is the entry fee.

Can you play rummy for real money in India now?

No. Since 1 May 2026 offering, advertising or processing payments for online rummy played for money is illegal in India, including on offshore and crypto sites. Free-to-play social games are still allowed.

Is crypto rummy legal?

Paying in crypto does not change the legal test. India's Act treats crypto-funded play as play for stakes, and an offshore licence lets a company operate from its base but does not make the game legal where the player lives.
