SKILL + CHANCE
Ludo for money: how cash ludo games work
Ludo for money turns the dice-and-token board game into a short, scored match where each player pays an entry fee and the winner takes the pot less the site's cut. Cash apps rebuilt the game around a timer or a fixed number of moves, so token choices count for more than in a family game. India, where apps such as Zupee built the ludo cash game, has banned it since 1 May 2026.
How a ludo cash game works
Choose a format and an entry fee
Cash ludo is sold as timed matches or matches with a fixed number of moves, for two to four players.
Roll and move
The app rolls one die for you. In score-based formats every token is open from the start, so no six is needed to leave the base.
Score as you go
Each square a token moves earns a point, and bringing a token home adds a bonus. A token that is captured goes back to the start.
Run out the clock or the moves
When the timer or the move count ends, the highest score wins. Missing several turns in a row can eliminate you.
Collect from the pot
The site keeps its cut and pays the winner, or the top places in some four-player formats.

Worked example
Entry fees and payouts for three common match shapes, with the site's cut assumed at 10%, the highest published fee among the skill-game sites in our research.
| Match | Entries | Pot | Cut (10%) | Winner gets | Break-even win rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1v1, $1 entry | 2 x $1 | $2.00 | $0.20 | $1.80 | 55.6% |
| 1v1, $10 entry | 2 x $10 | $20.00 | $2.00 | $18.00 | 55.6% |
| 4 players, winner takes all | 4 x $1 | $4.00 | $0.40 | $3.60 | 27.8% |
| Fair share with no cut, 1v1 | 50% | ||||
| Fair share with no cut, 4 players | 25% | ||||
The break-even win rate is your entry divided by the winner's payout. A player who wins exactly half of their $1 head-to-head matches loses 10 cents a match, so beating the cut takes a real edge over the field.
Ludo cash game formats: timed, move-limited and classic
Classic ludo gives each player four tokens that start in a base. A six releases a token, captures send a rival token back to the start, and the first player to bring all four tokens home wins. A full game can run a long time and turns on many dice rolls, which makes it a poor fit for quick paid matches.
Cash ludo apps changed the structure. Zupee's formats, as its site described them on 27 October 2026, show how:
- Timed (Ludo Supreme). Score as many points as possible before the clock runs out. Regular mode lasts 8 minutes for two players and 10 for four; Quick and Super Quick modes are shorter, down to 2.5 minutes for a two-player game. Every square moved is a point, tokens are open from the start, and bringing a token home scores extra.
- Move-limited (Ludo Turbo, Ludo Supreme League). Each player gets a set number of moves, so the question becomes how to spend them, not how fast the dice run.
- Extra turns and penalties. A six, a capture or a token reaching home gives another turn; three sixes in a row lose the turn; skipping more than two turns eliminates the player.
These formats shift weight from the dice to decisions: which token to move, when to capture, when to sit on a safe square. With a timer, a fast and accurate player also gets more moves in than a hesitant one.
Is ludo gambling? Dice, skill and the law
Every ludo move starts with a die roll, so chance is built in. Skill sits in the choice of token: a player who protects tokens on safe squares, captures at the right moment and spreads risk across the board beats a random mover over many games. That makes ludo a mixed game, closer to backgammon than to a pure chance format such as dice duels.
Whether that mix counts as gambling is a legal question, and the answer depends on the country:
- Great Britain: a game that involves both chance and skill is a game of chance under section 6 of the Gambling Act 2005, so ludo played for a money prize is gaming and needs a licence.
- India: cash ludo apps marketed ludo as a skill game. Since 1 May 2026 that label no longer matters, because the ban covers skill games, chance games and mixtures alike.
- United States: each state decides, and skill-game platforms switch off cash play state by state.
For the wider picture, see P2P gambling laws by country.
Short matches, big swings: the ludo cash game in numbers
Timed formats cut a game of ludo to a few minutes, which suits paid play but leaves less room for skill to show. A handful of good or bad rolls can decide a five-minute match between two decent players.
The arithmetic on a 10% cut makes the point. Two evenly matched players each win between 3 and 7 of 10 head-to-head matches about 89% of the time, so a 7-3 run says little about who is better. A player who truly wins 60% of $1 matches, comfortably above the 55.6% break-even, still finishes a run of 10 matches down about 37% of the time (five wins or fewer). Over 100 matches the chance of finishing down falls to about 18%.
Two conclusions follow. A short winning streak is weak evidence of an edge, and the cut is certain while the edge is not. Staking only what a long losing run would not hurt is the practical answer, and the same logic applies to any short-format skill game.
Ludo for money in India since 1 May 2026
India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 bans any online game played for stakes, whether it is based on skill, chance or both. The Act and its Rules took effect on 1 May 2026 (PIB, 30 April 2026). For ludo players that has three practical effects.
- Paid ludo is gone from the Indian apps. On 27 October 2026 Zupee's site, run by Cashgrail Private Limited, offered its ludo formats as free games and said users can withdraw their wallet balance without restrictions.
- Payments are blocked. Banks and payment systems may not process money-game transactions, and the authorities can block platforms under the IT Act, 2000.
- Offshore and crypto ludo is covered too. A stake paid in crypto is still a stake. Offering or facilitating a money game carries up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore.
Press reports say a Supreme Court challenge is pending, with no stay of the ban reported as of October 2026. The same rules apply to rummy for money.
Choosing the best ludo game for money: what to compare
No ludo site is listed on this page, so the useful comparison is between formats and terms, not brands. These points decide whether a ludo cash game is worth playing where it is legal.
- The cut. A site that shows the pot and the payout before you join lets you work out the fee and your break-even win rate, as in the worked example above. Skill-game fees published in our research run from 0% to 10%.
- Live or recorded opponents. Some skill platforms match you against a player who played earlier or later, or who paid a different entry. That is legal in their terms but changes what you are competing against.
- Bot disclosure. In April 2026 a US federal jury found Papaya Gaming liable for false advertising for not disclosing bots in its cash tournaments. A site should say plainly whether bots ever take a seat.
- Four-player collusion. In a four-player match, two friends can steer captures towards a third player. Two-player formats remove that risk.
- Disconnect rules. Missed turns can eliminate you, so a weak connection costs money in a timed match.

Ludo and board duels: where it is legal
Ludo for money mixes dice and decisions, and each country decides whether that mix makes it gambling.
| Country | Position |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | A game that mixes chance and skill is a game of chance under the Gambling Act 2005, so ludo for a money prize is gaming. A site serving players in Great Britain needs a Gambling Commission licence. |
| United States | Each state decides. Skill-game platforms geofence cash play: Skillz, for example, offers none in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana or South Dakota. |
| Australia | Online, Australia licenses wagering and bans online casino services under the Interactive Gambling Act. Skillz offers no cash play in Queensland or Victoria. |
| India | Banned since 1 May 2026, whether ludo is treated as skill, chance or both. Offering it carries up to 3 years in prison and/or a ₹1 crore fine. |
| EU | Each country licenses gambling separately, and skill-game operators exclude many EU states: Kokomo bars paid play in the Netherlands, Italy and Romania. |

Ludo and board duels questions
Is ludo gambling?
Played for money, it usually is. Every move depends on a die roll, and British law counts any game that mixes chance and skill as a game of chance. India banned it outright from 1 May 2026, and US states each set their own test.
Can you play ludo for real money?
Not in India since 1 May 2026, where the main cash ludo apps now offer free games. Elsewhere it depends on the country, and no ludo site is listed here as of October 2026.
What is the best ludo game for money?
Compare the format and the terms rather than the brand. Two-player matches with a published cut, live opponents and a stated rule on bots and disconnects give the clearest terms; a 10% cut means winning about 56% of head-to-head matches just to break even.
Is ludo skill or luck?
Both. The die decides how far you can move, but choosing which token to move, when to capture and when to stay on a safe square is skill, and timed or move-limited cash formats give those choices more weight.
Is ludo for money legal in India?
No. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 bans online games played for stakes from 1 May 2026, whether they are games of skill or chance, and bars banks from processing the payments.
How do ludo cash games make money?
The site keeps a share of the entry fees before paying the winner. With a 10% cut, two $1 entries make a $2 pot and the winner receives $1.80.
